Jan Ornelas

Jan’s farming background began when she purchased her first horse at the age of twelve. She worked for a boarding stables for three years, feeding, cleaning, and caring for forty-eight horses. In high school, Jan’s passion for farming continued as she took sixteen agriculture classes and became an active member of Future Farmers of America. After high school, Jan worked as a ranch-hand for Stewart Anderson’s ranch in Idaho while she pusued her BA degrees in Business and Childhood Education. In 1993, Jan became a sworn deputy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff. Besides regular patrol duties, Jan and her horse were also part of the Mounted Police Unit conducting search and rescue, body recovery and water canal patrols. In 1996, Jan and her horse moved to Vermont where Jan worked for Homeland Security and ran a small 12 acre farm. On the farm she and her family grew vegetables, canned jams and raised a variety of farm animals. The farm was also used as a sensory farm for autistic individuals who had high sensory needs. In her spare time Jan loves to build DIY items and restore bikes, cars, mowers – just about anything.
